what would happen if per-say a comet were to collide with the moon. We already know that mass extinctions and ash winters and such would befall the earth, but what kind of projected damage would be wrecked by a comet say the size of conneticut colliding with the moon? how would tide and magnetic forces be modified and how would our climate and social lives be changed if for instance the blow were to shatter the moon? discuss amongst yourselves...

The moon isn't THAT small - it would probably take more than a Connecticut-sized comet to dislodge the moon from its orbit.

I agree it would take a bigger comet than that, but assume the comet was big enough... We would face several immediate problems. First, our tides go out the window, or through the door. Probably down into the cellar as well. That means all the mangrove swamps die, taking some serious oxygenating stuff with em. Second, the debris from a moon-killer is going to fall into our orbit, then our atmosphere, and give us some major headaches. Like the paralysis of our satellite communications, destruction of population centres, etc. Not sure what happens from here, though...
